COVID-19 preparedness: Public Protector inspects Tshwane hospitals

Three hospitals in Pretoria have been given the thumbs up by the Public Protector’s office, which has started inspecting healthcare facilities across the country.

This week the focus is on Gauteng and hospitals are being assessed on COVID-19 preparedness. Busisiwe Mkhwebane said investigations into COVID-19 tenders are also being conducted from her office.

Mkhwebane visited Jubilee, George Mukhari and Steve Biko hospitals in Pretoria and she’s quite satisfied with their preparedness.

“It’s promising, it’s not doom and gloom. All in all, I would say things seem okay in these hospitals,” she said.

“Our intention as I said is to support and strengthen the administration if the hospital.”

In the Eastern Cape, things weren’t as pleasant when the public protector’s deputy conducted an inspection.

Dirty sheets and broken infrastructure were discovered, among other things.

Mkhwebane said reports from her office will come with recommendations on how to improve some of these facilities and should they fall on deaf ears, she is urging stakeholders to take legal action.

She is expected to visit other facilities in the province throughout the week.

Meanwhile, her office says investigations into alleged COVID-19 tender corruption are well underway.
