David Makhura concerned over rising Covid-19 infections in Gauteng

Gauteng Premier David Makhura is concerned that many people in the province are not adhering to COVID-19 protocols.

The country’s recorded over 8,000 new infections in the last 24-hour period.

Over 4,000 of those were in the province.

“We need the support of the people of our province, at the moment, all we can say is that we are not seeing a difference in the number of people that are gathering at places,” says Makhura.

He says in January the response was amazing and everybody took measures to protect themselves, “but at the moment we are not seeing that”.

Meanwhile, former Ministerial Advisory Committee head, Salim Abdool Karim has called for tougher restrictions for Gauteng.

He says, the province is not coping with the COVID-19 third wave.

Karim says aside from the province reporting the bulk of new infections, it’s also experiencing challenges at some of its hospitals.
