All schools will have enough water to receive their full complement of pupils by the end of this month. That’s what the Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Department has pledged to Parliament.

Eighty percent of a project to deliver water tanks and tankers to schools has been completed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But water supply to schools in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal is still lagging behind. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the need for consistent water supply.

“There are some people who have been living without water for years,” Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said.

“They go to the nearest pond and when that pond is dried up, they go for miles and miles with their buckets on their heads. 25 years down the line in our democracy, it is unacceptable and it is a shame.”

The national water response team says all 2,724 targeted schools will have a water supply by the end of July.

A total of 96 percent of targeted schools have already received water tanks.

The delivery of water tanks to schools has, however, led to unhappiness in communities where there is no water. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
