The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa has written an open letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa to address what it calls the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on nurses.
Frontline workers say they need wage increases and a risk allowance.
Denosa President, Simon Hlungwani says nurses are demotivated as they also have to work longer hours while being at risk of getting infected with COVID-19.
“The President (Ramaphosa) must not take it as business as usual when nurses are dying from COVID-19. We are demanding the President intervene. We need our wage increase which is due to us.”
Meanwhile, the Health Department recorded 49 new COVID-19 deaths in South Africa, taking the total number of fatalities to 15,427.
The recovery rate remains at 89.9%.
Most of the new deaths are from the Western Cape and Gauteng.
Over 1,800 new COVID-19 cases have been reported.
