Gauteng Premier David Makhura says that there has been an increase in COVID-19 cases in the past eight days in Gauteng. In the regions, there has also been a steady increase. South Africa is moving to Level 3 of the lockdown on Monday. Nationally, the number of confirmed cases now sits at 27,403 with 577 deaths.
Gauteng makes up 12 percent of these cases and 5 percent of deaths. Makhura said one of his concerns is that positive cases are increasing, but recoveries seem to have plateaued. The premier said the province will be treating the West Rand as a “hotspot” as there have been significant increases in COVID-19 cases.
Makhura said some of the same procedures that have been applied to other cluster infections including extensive contact tracing, quarantining and greater resources allocated for medical care will be applied to new hotspots. He added that the hotspot procedure has been updated to include ward-based multidisciplinary teams to operate on a microlevel.
He said the level of vigilance will be increased over the coming days, particularly in the mining industry to ensure compliance with safety measures.
