SA records 5 920 new COVID-19 cases

South Africa’s COVID-19 infection rate is steadily declining.

On Thursday, 5,920 new infections were recorded, with the positivity rate standing at 14.3 percent.

The Western Cape remains South Africa’s COVID-19 hotspot, reporting just below 1,500 new infections.

Both Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal recorded under 1,200 cases.

The Eastern Cape and Limpopo reported 559 and 524 new infections respectively.

The Department of Health has noted that there may be a backlog on the death toll.

A total of 159 additional deaths have been recorded, 51 of those within the past 48 hours.

It is likely that by Friday the national death toll will cross the 93,000 line.
