Gauteng ready for increase in COVID-19 cases

The Gauteng Health Department says it is ready for the rise in COVID-19 cases expected in the coming weeks.

Provincial Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi says there are plans in place to ensure that the province handles the increase in infections.

“The plan includes our communication strategy where we will be working with our communities starting from Monday. We will be educating people making sure they comply with regulations,” she said.

“The plan is on bed occupancy. We are checking daily, how many beds we have.”

Mokgethi joined healthcare workers at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital on Thursday for a candle lighting ceremony.

The Department of Health reported that South Africa recorded 18,000 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours.

This marks another record number of cases recorded in a single day.
