The showdown between the Public Protector and President Cyril Ramaphosa takes centre stage at the High Court in Pretoria. Ramaphosa is fighting to overturn Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s report on the donation by Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson to his 2017 ANC election campaign.
The Public Protector’s conclusion was that the President violated the ethics code and that accepting certain donations was a conflict of interest.
Ramaphosa wants the courts to keep secret his foundation’s bank statements and those of other entities related to his CR17 campaign. Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise has approved a motion to begin proceedings for Mkhwebane’s removal. The motion was brought by the Democratic Alliance.
