Police Minister Bheki Cele says he believes they’ve netted some of the ring leaders in an alleged corruption syndicate at Fort Hare University.
Fifteen people were arrested in four provinces during the Easter weekend.
They’re facing charges of fraud and corruption for their alleged involvement in malfeasance that cost the institutions millions of rands.
This brings the tally of people arrested in the matter to 25, including some of the instutition’s staffers and business owners.
Anwar Khan, the former bodyguard of slain rapper, Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, is among those arrested.
Cele said law enforcement would spare no resources in bringing the culprits to book.
“There are people from the university, there are people from KZN, there are people from the security industry. They’re quite top people, some of them. I’m told there is even a former acting judge, a former official from the NPA working for the Asset Forfeiture Unit. Rather than chasing a small fish that is a trigger-puller and tomorrow they’ll get a new one, we’ll deal with the structure.”
