COVID-19: Retired healthcare practitioners to assist in fighting the coronavirus outbreak

Retired healthcare practitioners are heeding the call to assist in fighting the coronavirus outbreak. Those above the age of 60 will only be deployed to assist with the primary care of patients who don’t have COVID-19. In Gauteng, thousands of retirees have so far offered their services.

It comes as trade unions have expressed concern over a lack of training and protection made available to nurses and community healthcare workers.

“We have already received over 4,000 volunteers and we going to utilizse them sparingly,” said Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Mauku. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.
