Grade 1 pupil dies after allegedly consuming biscuits bought from Tsakane spaza shop

A grade one learner has died at a school in Tsakane, East of Johannesburg, after allegedly consuming biscuits bought from a local spaza shop.

The Gauteng Education Department said the Mandlethu Primary School pupil started feeling sick just before lunchtime earlier on Tuesday.

It’s understood the learner’s parents were called to the school and confirmed that she had eaten snacks from a local store.

Spokesperson Zolani Mkhwemte said by the time emergency services arrived it was too late.

“Unfortunately, the learner was certified dead by paramedics upon arrival. Police are investigating circumstances surrounding this incident.”
