City of Cape Town: Service delivery efforts won’t be derailed by construction mafia

The City of Cape Town says its service delivery efforts will not be derailed by threats of violence by the construction mafia.

The metro was granted an interdict by the Western Cape High Court on Friday to stop the harassment of its contractors working on the South-East MyCiTi bus route.

The construction of the route between Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain has been delayed for over two weeks following intimidation by alleged extortionists, who demand protection money from the city’s employees.

City of Cape Town MMC for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas said individuals associated with five development and business forums in Mitchells Plain forced one of the contractors offsite at the end of February.

“We are liaising with the contractor, who is taking the necessary steps to resume the work on-site as soon as possible.

“We are committed to delivering services to Capetonians and will do whatever is necessary to ensure our infrastructure projects remain on course.”
