Parliament expects Eskom to meet compliance targets despite challenges

The chairperson of Parliament’s environment committee said they expect Eskom to meet air-quality targets despite its challenges and financial constraints.
This comes after Eskom told the committee it could fulfill only half of its obligation and that only in four years.
The power utility says that due to excessive financial and resource requirements, it’s adopted a phased approach for 57 percent compliance by 2025.
National Assembly Chairperson of Portfolio Committee on Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Party, Fikile Xasa said: “[The] progress is satisfying to us, as far as we are concerned. Generally, they are part of every activity of government in the country, they are part of the presidential commission on climate change.
“They are committed. Their team was led by the chairperson of the board. They are committed to trying to meet our obligations internationally as well as our national commitments as [the] government.”
