Community lays charges against Cape Town mayor Dan Plato

Various community organisations from Strandfontein outside Cape Town have laid criminal charges against the city and its mayor. They claim the National Disaster Management Act is impossible to enforce on a site where more than a thousand homeless people are staying. They’re worried about people moving in and out of the camp without applying adequate hygiene.

The Strandfontein Social and Economic Development Forum and the Strandfontein Ratepayers Association have now laid criminal charges against the City of Cape Town and mayor Dan Plato.

“What concerned me the most was when we were taken to the tents where the homeless people are held there were groups of much more than 50,” said the forum’s Mandy van Willing. Van Willingh says she’s very worried about the large number of service providers coming and going at the site.

City of Cape Town spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo said they’ll wait for formal communication from police about the charges before commenting on them. According to him, everyone entering the site is screened for COVID-19 and there have been no cases so far.  Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday
