Deputy President Paul Mashatile said coalition governments were not always about the people.
Mashatile called on coalition governments to “put people first” instead of pursuing narrow political interests that have caused instability in some of the country’s key metros.
He said the government would review the negative impact of dysfunctional coalition arrangements and the impact they had on service delivery.
Mashatile was responding to questions in the National Council of Provinces for the first time as deputy president.
“We must put people first. In some of the coalitions you can see that those coalitions are set up, it’s not really about the people. So we want this framework to be able to guide all the municipalities. Put the people first and ensure that coalitions should be put in place for the benefit of the people,” he said on Thursday.
Mashatile added that they would enhance the current South African Local Government Association framework on coalitions to make it stronger and to focus more on providing services.
