DA accuses ANC of trying to take over coalition government dialogue

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has accused the African National Congress (ANC) of trying to “hijack” the National Dialogue on Coalition Governments currently underway in Cape Town.

The two-day dialogue is hosted by Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

DA chief whip, Siviwe Gwarube said it became apparent during discussions on Friday that the government was already working on its own coalition legislation.

She said the ANC was undermining the law-making process already underway in Parliament and made a “mockery” of the intention of the coalition dialogue.

“Our view is that if the government has seen the value in the work that we’ve done over the past year, then they should support the three bills that are coming to Parliament in the coming weeks, instead of developing a parallel process that now undermines the intention of the national dialogue”

Gwarube said the DA’s bills are not designed to prop up a “failing ANC” but to protect South Africans.
