SIU welcomes judgment ordering cleaning contracts to be repaid

The Special Investigating Unit has welcomed the judgment setting aside the contracts to deep clean Gauteng schools.

The Special Tribunal has ordered service providers who received over R400-million to pay back the money.

Its findings revealed the Gauteng Education Department irregularly awarded R431-million in contracts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said, “we’re elated with this kind of judgment, it shows consequence management, when it came to our attention we went and looked into in.”

“First, people are not given a fair chance when it comes to procurement, they gave it to friends and family, names of companies given by Whatsapp, and they were given the job”.
