City of Tshwane disconnects 70 households from water & power grid as it steps up revenue collection campaign

The City of Tshwane has disconnected more than 70 households from its water and power grid in Pretoria.

In a determined effort to combat the financial challenges it faces, the metro has amplified its ‘Tshwane Ya Tima’ revenue collection campaign this week.

The city is currently targeting about 1,500 non-paying customers who owe billions to the metro.

Along with the disconnections, the municipality is also imposing steep fines for meter tampering and illegal connections.

MMC for Finance, Jacqui Uys, said that about R50 million in outstanding bills was owed to the city.

“As we intensify our revenue collection campaign, I wish to appeal to residential estate managers to allow city meter readers to do their job and not block access. It is important that we work together but, if necessary, we will use law enforcement. As the MMC for finance, I want to emphasise that the city needs revenue to deliver services and to honour commitments to creditors such as Eskom and Rand Water.”
