The City of Cape Town said it will provide the national government with land and facilities for additional police stations in the metropole.
This follows a “very promising” meeting between policing officials from all three spheres of government last week.
City Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said he’s hopeful the meeting will help achieve crime reduction in the Western Cape within the next two years.
Smith said that besides offering land to build more police stations, he also outlined measures for effective cooperation and sharing of resources.
“The minister has agreed that we will finalize an agreement to identify areas of intervention and resolve areas of cooperation soon. The winds of change seem refreshing and we are excited on the future possibilities and that we would be able to achieve increased synergy between the city and SAPS.”
Smith said that a new operational strategy to tackle gang violence and other violent crimes was also on the cards.
