Chelsea Drop Points at Home in 0-0 Draw With Crystal Palace

Chelsea were left frustrated at Stamford Bridge as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace in a Premier League clash that was not short on controversy. Despite dominating possession and registering 19 attempts, the Blues could only manage three shots on target and failed to break down a disciplined Palace defense.

The match’s main talking point came in the 13th minute when Crystal Palace thought they had taken the lead through Eberechi Eze, only for VAR to intervene and chalk the goal off due to a rare infringement involving the defensive wall. The decision, which hinged on a technical interpretation of the rules, sparked debate and ultimately ensured that Chelsea escaped early damage.

VAR Disallows Eze Free-Kick After Rare Wall Infringement

Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, who started despite transfer speculation linking him to Tottenham Hotspur, looked to have opened the scoring early on. His thunderous free-kick flew past Chelsea keeper Robert Sánchez, sending the away fans into celebration.

However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review showed Palace captain Marc Guehi had infringed upon Chelsea’s defensive wall. Guehi was deemed to have pushed Moisés Caicedo while positioning himself too close to the wall at the moment Eze struck the ball—violating a rarely enforced rule that prohibits attacking players from being within one yard of the wall when a free-kick is taken.

Referee James Bell, alerted by the VAR team, made the call to disallow the goal. While technically correct, the decision left many fans and pundits surprised. Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane commented, “Attacking teams now need to be aware of this rule. We see players in there blocking and being a nuisance all the time. Guehi’s almost gone too far in being a nuisance and shoving players about.”

Chelsea Struggle to Create Clear-Cut Chances

Despite the reprieve, Chelsea failed to capitalize on the momentum. The hosts started brightly, nearly scoring in the third minute when Marc Cucurella’s clever header was cleared off the line by Ismaila Sarr. That would be one of Chelsea’s few meaningful efforts, as they struggled to convert possession into quality chances.

Chelsea attempted 19 shots throughout the match, but only three found the target. Much of their attacking play lacked sharpness and cohesion. In the second half, they managed to exert more control but continued to lack creativity in the final third.

Liam Delap had the best chance of the second half, volleying straight at Palace keeper Dean Henderson late in the game. Substitute Andrey Santos also had an opportunity to snatch a winner but blazed his effort over the bar.

Palace Impress But Fail to Capitalize

While Chelsea controlled possession, Crystal Palace looked the more dangerous side in the opening half. Just moments after the disallowed goal, Adam Wharton produced a moment of brilliance in midfield, turning past a defender and sliding a perfectly weighted pass through to Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Palace forward, however, was denied by a smart save from Sánchez.

Roy Hodgson’s side remained disciplined and well-organized throughout the game, frustrating Chelsea and limiting them to long-range efforts and half-chances. Despite a late push from the hosts, Palace held firm to secure a valuable point on the road.

Chelsea’s Attacking Concerns Continue

The result adds to growing concerns about Chelsea’s attacking efficiency under their current setup. Despite investing heavily in attacking talent over the past few seasons, the Blues continue to struggle in the final third.

The lack of cutting edge and a true goal-scoring presence continues to haunt the Stamford Bridge side. With only three shots on target from 19 attempts, questions are again being raised about how this Chelsea squad will consistently find goals over the course of the season.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has spoken previously about the need for patience and chemistry among his young squad, but fans will expect more precision and threat from their front line, especially in home fixtures against mid-table opponents.

With a demanding Premier League schedule ahead, Chelsea must quickly address their attacking issues. Whether that means tactical changes or giving more minutes to emerging talents, the club must find a solution before more points are dropped.

Palace, on the other hand, will take positives from a solid away performance and remain unbeaten in the early part of the season. If Eze remains at the club beyond the transfer window, the Eagles will feel they can build something meaningful this year.
