3 charred remains recovered in gutted building

Charred remains of three people were recovered in a building gutted in a fire on Eagle Road in Missionlands, Verulam, on Saturday.

Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), said family and friends of the four men who failed to return home on Saturday morning went to their place of employment to look for them

We received a call for assistance after the search party peered through a window of the guttered building and noticed what appeared to be skeletal remains.

“Paramedics were immediately dispatched and on arrival confirmed the discovery was human remains. The Ethekwini Fire & Rescue Services arrived shortly after that and located two more bodies. One person is still unaccounted for,” said Balram.

According to relatives of the deceased, nine Malawian nationals were working the night shift at the furniture manufacturing business when a fire broke out around 11.30 pm on Friday.

“All exits and entrances were allegedly locked by their employer at the start of their shift preventing the men from escaping the inferno, [however] this could not be confirmed by Rusa.

“Five employees jumped out of windows from the upper level of the building. They escaped with minor injuries.”

Balram said firefighters continued searching for the one person who is still missing.
