Appeals to reopen Charlotte Maxeke Hospital

In April last year, one of Johannesburg’s biggest hospitals — Charlotte Maxeke — went up in flames.

Nine wards were damaged and over 800 patients had to be evacuated.

In July, some wards reopened, but surrounding hospitals remain under enormous pressure to take up the slack from the remaining closed wards.

In November, the building experienced flooding.

Professor Adam Mahomed, head of internal medicine at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, said “essentially we are operating with one arm, with one leg cut off, and one eye missing.

“We are expected to offer a service and we are one of the largest tertiary hospitals in Southern Africa, linked to Chris Hani Baragwanath, Groote Schuur, and Tygerburg.

“The services we render are unique and cannot be replaced by district and regional hospitals,” he said.
