Despite opening for radiation and oncology patients, concerns remain that Charlotte Maxeke Hospital still can’t accommodate COVID-19 patients.
A fire in April led to its closure for several weeks, putting pressure on an already strained healthcare system.
Head of Wits University School of Clinical Medicine, Professor Daynia Ballot, said she’s relieved the facility is reopening, but she’s concerned about the lack of qualified nurses to man available beds.
“What we are hoping is that the parts of the hospital that were not structurally damaged in the fire… will soon reopen as well,” she said.
“That will go a long way to addressing the issue of ICU, theatres and high-care beds.”
Meanwhile, management said the first day has gone smoothly.
