CCMA confirms unions and SAA have signed an agreement

An agreement between SAA and unions has been reached, which has led to unions coming out to propose the deal to its members before heading back into another session of negotiations with management.
As South African Airways (SAA) scrambles to secure funding to run day-to-day operations, and also to pay salaries for month-end, an agreement between unions and management has been reached, mediated by the Commission of Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
The CCMA confirmed that the wage dispute between SAA and unions has been resolved following a mediated process that was reconvened on Wednesday. The mediated process resulted in an agreement signed at midday on Friday.
The CCMA plans to provide post-dispute support to the parties in ensuring that they work through some of the underlying issues.
“The CCMA director, Cameron Morajane, takes the opportunity to commend the parties for remaining in-process and restoring some measure of stability. The director also commends the commitment of CCMA commissioners who mediated this process. The CCMA remains committed to making a difference in the labour market, as intended by the CCMA’s Senz’umehluko Strategy.”
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) alongside the SA Cabin Crew Association, will make the 11-hour announcement on the negotiations after an eight-day long protest.
Numsa is expected to have a briefing tabling the agreement while spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola maintained an 8% salary increase was doable and that unions had found creative ways to have their demands met by the airline.
“We had to get creative in order to get SAA to find the 8% [salary hike]. We understand that SAA doesn’t have money, the minister made it clear.”
The strike is suspended in the meantime while final negotiations continue between unions and management.
Preliminary reports indicate that an 8% increase is likely to happen but over a period of time, with an agreement on retrenchments also reached. A task team has also been roped in to table plans to save costs for the airline.
