Polokwane Municipality urges motorists not to pay for inner CBD parking

A statement by the Polokwane Municipality says its court order against ParkPoint remains a ‘valid and standing court order’, and urges motorists not to pay for the company’s parking services in the city’s streets.

The municipality announced last month that it terminated the contractor responsible for the on-street parking within the CBD, and that a court order was obtained.

Municipal spokesperson Matshidiso Mothapo at the time explained: “The court order prevents the company or any of its agents from operating, managing parking, and collecting revenue from motorists within the city.”

In a statement published today the municipality states their previously obtained court order remains valid, and that despite a statement released by ParkPoint, motorists should refrain from engaging in the company’s on-street parking services.

The municipal statement adds no further comment will be provided at this time as the municipality and the company continue their legal dispute.

The system

The on-street parking management system was introduced towards the end of November 2019 and motorists had to pay R8 per hour or part thereof from 08:00 until 17:00 on weekdays and on Saturdays from 08:00 until 13:00 with free parking on Sundays.

The project was implemented in phases with the first phase between Grobler and Bodenstein streets on Landdros Maré, Schoeman, and Hans van Rensburg streets.

Irate motorists previously stated the fee is ‘exorbitant’.
