The City of Johannesburg is calling on the public not to enter areas that have been cordoned off near the Bree gas explosion site warning that it’s unsafe.
On Wednesday, a large explosion occurred on Bree and Rissik streets, killing one person and injuring 40 others while also causing massive infrastructure damage.
At a media briefing in Braamfontein on Friday, officials from the city announced that they had noticed that people were going beyond the barrier lines in order to take pictures of the site.
Over the last few hours, Johannesburg Emergency Services have discovered that a tunnel which runs underneath Lillian Ngoyi and Loveday streets was unstable, posing an imminent risk of collapsing.
Johannesburg Municipality city manager, Floyd Brink, said the area had now been cordoned off to people and motorists for safety reasons.
He said people that did not respect the barriers put up by the city ran the risk of worsening the situation.
“If an area is barricaded, please do not enter that particular area. Our officers have also been instructed to do exactly the same to ensure that we do not have any incidents in that area.”
Meanwhile, civil and fire engineering consultant, Johan Lagrange, said there is little chance of a secondary explosion happening.
