Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize says a tracer team has been dispatched in KwaZulu-Natal. Mkhize was responding to MPs on the first confirmed coronavirus/COVID-19 in South Africa.
A 38-year-old man has tested positive for the virus.
The man recently travelled to Italy and has been on voluntary home quarantine.
“We have got a whole team of our emergency operations centre [which] has gone to identify all the contacts, interviewing the patient and the doctor,” said Mkhize.
The minister said epidemiologists, clinicians from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases are also in KZN.
He said the department is tracing other people that might have been exposed to the virus and that they will be tested.
Over 120 tests were done on cases where the virus was suspected.
Travel ban not on cards for South Africa amid coronavirus outbreak.
Mkhize urged South Africans to remain calm.
“We must not allow panic to set in because this spread of this virus is indeed worrying. In January, it was declared public health emergency of international concern by WHO [World Health Organization.]”
Meanwhile, Mkhize said the Emergency Operations Centre will be running 24-hours from now on.
