Multiple fires keep Cape Winelands firefighters busy

It was another busy night for firefighters in the Cape Winelands District Municipality.

On Wednesday, teams were still on the ground in Worcester, Tankwa Karoo, De Doorns, Wellington, and Ceres.

The municipality’s Jo-Anne Otto: “The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services can confirm that at Brandvlei outside Worcester, there are no active lines, although there are many hot spots and several smouldering pine stumps in the area. Other than the corrugated storage facility that was destroyed two days ago, there have been no damages to homes or the prison facility.”

Meanwhile, Otto said monitoring and mopping up operations were continuing in Baviaanshoek in the Tankwa Karoo.

“The fire crews report that the long fire line at Baviaanshoek caused some commotion in the night as it appeared as if the fire would be moving toward properties.

“CWDM’s Fire Services supported by Witzenberg Fire Services and contracted ground crews from NCC continued with structure protection in this area. Although the fire line is very long and there is a high fuel load, the fire moved away from property back into the mountains.”
