Cape Winelands vegetation fire burning for seventh day

Cape Winelands District Municipality firefighters are facing an uphill battle as an extensive vegetation fire burned for a 7th straight day on Sunday.

The municipality’s fire and rescue service said its crew has been fighting the flames overnight in two separate areas in Bain’s Kloof in Wolseley and surrounds, and Fairy Glen in Worcester.

In the Wolseley area, the Cape Winelands Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze has been spreading fast, fueled by windy conditions.

The crew said its efforts remained focused on protecting lives and property.

According to municipal officials, firefighters have now managed to access the Gouda and Saron side of the mountain, which has been difficult to reach.

The municipality appealed to motorists to find alternative routes after the Bain’s Kloof Pass was closed to traffic.

Meanwhile, fire and rescue spokesperson Jo-anne Otto said several properties were affected by the fire at Fairy Glen in Worcester.

“Despite immense efforts, five structures were destroyed,” she said.

“The fire line split into two sections. The left flank is burning into cliffs and teams are making good progress, while the right-hand flank is a little more troublesome.”
