Some scholar transport operators who had their cars impounded Thursday morning said they don’t know how they’re going to feed their families.
Several private vehicles transporting children to school were impounded in Mitchells Plain on Thursday morning for not having operating licences.
One scholar transport driver was arrested for drunk driving and driving an unroadworthy vehicle.
The publication spoke to two drivers, on condition of anonymity, who had their vehicles taken for not having operating licences.
The first driver said today was his first time ever transporting children and he was hoping to make some money to apply for an operating licence.
“This year was my first year transporting children because of a dire situation back home. I thought let me start a scholar transport service because I have a roadworthy vehicle, I just did not have the permit.”
The second driver said he did not know where he would get the money to pay the R7,000 fine to have his car released.
“I haven’t even made the money I’m being asked for because we started in the middle of the month. I was hoping to make some money from next month.”
