Cape Town refugees to learn their fate

More than 700 refugees and asylum seekers in Cape Town will know their fate on 17 February. They’ve been living in and around the Central Methodist Church on Green Market Square for over three months.

They’re demanding to be moved and resettled in a third country. The City of Cape Town has turned to the High Court to force the refugees and asylum seekers to comply with municipal by-laws.

These include not sleeping, cooking, urinating and defecating on the pavements and surrounding areas. Lawyers for the city say after a dozen meetings with refugee leaders, the police and Home Affairs, no agreement’s been reached.

The legal counsel for Home Affairs says officials are ready to start the documentation and verification process. They’re waiting for the City to provide logistical assistance.
