SAHRC intervenes in Cape Town refugee conflict

Chaos and tension has continued to mount outside the Central Methodist Church in Cape Town on Tuesday. Public order police and the SA Human Rights Commission have come in to resolve a standoff between two refugee groups which had been housed at the church.

SA Human Rights Commissioner Chris Nissen said different stakeholders including Home Affairs, the mayor of Cape Town, SAPS, and the UNHCR to assess what action can be taken.

Nissen said relocation for the refugees would not be possible but stakeholders would be attempting to facilitate safe reintegration and relief for people who have been left destitute.

The SAHRC said alternative accommodation for the refugees is one of the highest priorities for the stakeholders.
