Gang wars: Safety of learners returning to Cape Flats schools under spotlight

The safety of learners returning to schools in the Cape Flats is under the spotlight this week as gang wars continue to rage in certain areas.

In Lotus River, an ongoing gang war has left 14 people dead in just over two weeks.

Police and law enforcement agencies are this week planning to launch a multi-disciplinary operation aimed at bringing relief to affected communities.

A learner from Lotus High School, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she feels safe when she’s at the school, which is situated in the middle of the gang war.

“Going home, I walk, which is also a bit scary because I also have to walk over the field. But in terms of being in the school, I feel safe, but the moment school’s out and I have to walk home from school, it’s a bit dodgy for me because you never know – they might just start shooting and I might just be one of the victims.”
