Campus Principal (post level 4) (contract appointment: five years)

The Campus Principal works closely with the relevant deans and heads of departments on the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa campuses and reports to the office of the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the UFS. The campus principal is a full member of the executive management of the UFS. The managers at the South Campus report in a matrix relationship to the campus principal and applicable line managers on the Bloemfontein Campus of the UFS.

Duties and responsibilities:

Doing strategic planning for, leading and managing the South Campus as the centralised seat for the delivery of open distance learning programmes, certain extended curriculum programmes and innovative projects at the UFS.
Managing the strategic development and further roll-out of an open and distance learning model through technology, fully online, blended learning approaches and other creative distance delivery techniques.
Optimising the design and delivery of new niche open learning programmes, short learning programmes and projects to be presented by the existing faculties via the South Campus.
Managing and further developing an effective ICT system to optimally utilise modern technology across the whole spectrum of contact with students.
Maintaining and developing local and global partnerships with internal role players, academic and support services, as well as strategic external/global partners in order to manage the campus to the advantage of the whole institution and the higher education sector in particular.
Maintaining and developing partnerships with other institutions (nationally and internationally) to bring about wider use of services and ensure the high quality of delivery of programmes.
Promoting/initiating/undertaking research aimed at making the best possible use of open tuition strategies and models.
Staying at the forefront of distance learning and access programmes and displaying the interest, passion and motivation to do so.
Fulfilling all management duties (administrative and financial) relating to the strategic development and management of the campus.
Doing budget management, resource planning and the equitable apportioning of resources within the context of academic and strategic planning.
Accountable for all campus compliance per legislation and policies.
Excellent staff and student relationship management in a changing higher education environment.
Ensuring the wellness of staff and students.
Managing risks and quality assurance.
Promoting transformation and inclusivity.

Inherent requirements:
Doctoral degree.
At least seven (7) years senior management experience in a higher education institution.
Outstanding achievements (on a provincial, national and/or international level) in the field of open and distance learning in higher education and the successful management of open learning opportunities.
High level of ICT knowledge and experience.

Recommendations:
Sound knowledge and understanding of university governance structures in higher education.
Demonstration of a track record managing a complex portfolio, or running a unit of reasonable size.
Access to good contacts, acquaintances and networks in the fields of distance tuition, open learning, higher education and ICT will serve as a strong recommendation.
Knowledge of applicable education policies and practices and environmental demands.
A good sense of the demands of the academic environment and research practices.

Term of office:
Five years, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further term.

Assumption of duties:

As soon as possible.

Salary:

The salary scale is available on request.
