SA Lockdown – GBV activists call for action

Perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) must face the full might of the law, according to activists. The call comes after Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed that over 2,000 cases were reported in the first week of the lockdown.

“We must alert the public that the law has not been suspended criminality must be dealt with as such…you have access to police services, they have not been shut down, it’s one of the essential services during this time”, said Nthabiseng Moleko from the Commission for Gender Equality.

Moleko said it is important for people to know that there are systems in place to help support people who might need help during the lockdown.

South Africans who are being abused are encouraged to use the SAPS number dedicated to deal with cases of abuse.

The number is 0800 428 428.
