Buses back on the roads after almost a month

Bus drivers are back behind the wheel on Tuesday morning after almost a month on strike.

Unions have agreed to a 9 percent wage hike in the first year, and 8 percent in the following year.

But workers also wanted back pay to 1 April.

Employers agreed to compensate workers from 1 to 17 April, but only on basic wages.

A task team will deal with other issues such as night-shift allowances.

Bus services are resuming nationwide, much to the relief of commuters.

Bus strike

The crippling national bus strike that has left thousands of commuters frustrated for weeks is finally over.

Last week, employers and unions reached agreement on wage increases.

But talks stalled on the issue of back-pay, with employers saying the increases would only become effective once agreed upon officially.

Employers had maintained that no back-pay was due to striking employees.

Employees affiliated to the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) then held back on signing the deal.

But the impasse has come to an end.
