Death toll in Ekurhuleni R21 bus crash revised to 13

The death toll from the fatal bus crash on the R21 highway in Ekurhuleni has been revised to 13, down from the initially reported 16 fatalities.
Officials had first announced on Tuesday that 16 people had lost their lives in the tragic accident, but further investigations and medical assessments have confirmed the correct number to be 13.
Updated Figures on the Injured
At a media briefing on Wednesday morning, Gauteng officials provided an update on the situation, revealing that 77 passengers were transported to various hospitals for treatment.
The City of Ekurhuleni has committed to assisting the affected families as they come to terms with the devastating loss and injuries suffered in the crash.
Ekurhuleni Mayor Vows Support
Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza addressed the media, saying that the city is compiling a full report on the crash, which will include details of all those injured.
“Yesterday [Tuesday], we were reporting 45 [injured], but we can now confirm that 77 patients were transported to various healthcare facilities for treatment,” said Xhakaza.
“It is important that we emphasise this part because, at the accident scene, there were those who were critically injured.”
The mayor assured the public that every effort is being made to ensure that all victims receive the necessary medical attention and support.
Investigation into the Cause of the Crash
Authorities, including the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), are still investigating the cause of the horrific crash.
Preliminary reports suggest that the bus rolled several times before coming to a stop on its side.
Survivors have raised concerns about whether the bus was overloaded and whether passengers were standing during the journey.
The RTMC is also conducting a full mechanical investigation to determine if the bus was roadworthy at the time of the accident.
Driver’s Speeding History Under Scrutiny
In addition to the bus’s condition, authorities are also looking into allegations that the bus driver had a history of reckless driving.
Several passengers who regularly use the route have claimed that the driver was known for speeding.
One survivor of the crash said:
“This is the bus I take every day. I always complain that the driver is speeding.”
The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and SANRAL (South African National Roads Agency Limited) have indicated that they will review highway surveillance footage to establish the exact speed of the bus before the crash.
Condolences and Calls for Safer Transport
President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his condolences to the families of the deceased and called on public transport operators to prioritise passenger safety.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures in public transportation, with many South Africans calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent future tragedies.
As the investigation continues, families of the victims are awaiting answers, while survivors begin their long road to recovery.
