Maskandi artist’s house burns down
Bonginkosi “Bobo Mfana Wepiki” Mhlongo has to rebuild his home. This comes after the maskandi artist’s house in Nquthu, northern KZN, went up in flames on Wednesday, 16 February.
His niece Nozipho, who was there during the incident, said: “It happened at around 9pm. I was with my grandparents inside a rondavel when it started raining heavily.
“A thunderstorm started and a fireball burst open a door, and rolled towards us. We ran in all directions. It burst and set the room alight.”
Nozipho said as they were escaping, a neighbour called to say the outside of the rondavel was burning.
“The fireball moved to the next rondavel and set it alight before moving to the main house. Both rondavels were destroyed but we managed to save the house.
“We are still confused, but we are grateful we escaped,” she said.
Bobo said he was alerted by family members that lightning had struck the house.
“From what I was told, lightning moved from rondavel to rondavel until it reached the house. Fortunately, they managed to extinguish it and no one was injured.
“The damage is estimated at around R100 000,” he said.
“I’m still shocked and angry. Someone is jealous of my family and sent this. I can’t mention names because I don’t have proof.
“This is a setback, both financially and emotionally. It means I have to start all over again but I will not fold my arms. I will consult traditional healers and find answers.”
Cultural expert Dr Nomagugu Ngobese said the lightning was not natural.
“They need to consult with an inyanga who will cleanse them and protect the entire household so this doesn’t happen again,” she said.
