Police in NMB say murders of 2 brothers scammed through social media concerning

Nelson Mandela Bay police said the murders of two brothers who were scammed through social media was concerning.

Aaron and Kyle Alberts were robbed and killed in Motherwell, near Gqeberha, after responding to a Facebook Marketplace advert on Saturday.

It’s understood when they arrived at the advertised address, they were told by the occupants of the house that they were in the wrong place.

They were subsequently approached by two people who shot and robbed them.

Private investigator and owner of IRS Forensics, Chad Thomas, said social media scams were not uncommon in the country, and yet people still fell victim to them.

“If the deal seems to be too good to be true and the price seems ridiculously low, then obviously there is something wrong.”

Thomas said whether you were conducting a deal via Facebook Marketplace or any other online platform, you should never agree to meet a person at a secluded or private home.

“Don’t go to a place you’re not familiar with, and if you are compelled to go somewhere, meet in a public place, take someone with you, and make sure at all times you are protected. Don’t carry cash with you.”
