Pupils protest against school’s broken toilets, rotten food & corporal punishment in KZN

Sukuma Secondary School parents in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, have vowed to continue with protest action until their demands are met.
The furious pupils and parents blockaded F.J Sithole Road in Imbali Unit 1, with broken bottles and burning tyres, and trees on Monday morning.
There were broken bottles that were being brought into the school premises.
The pupils were complaining about the lack of water at the school, corporal punishment, broken toilets, broken windows at the school, the boarding house, and boarders being fed “rotten food”.
Parents who spoke to The Witness said they decided to take to the streets after the school management and department of education representatives did not pitch up at a meeting that was scheduled to take place on Sunday at the school.
The meeting was aimed at addressing the issues that led to the pupil’s protest that took place last week.
“What they did was just disrespect for us as parents. They called a meeting and they did not come. We are tired now. We want the MEC to come and sort out the issues in this school. Nothing will go on until the problems are fixed,” said one parent.
