Power restored to parts of Braamfontein following M1 underground fire

City Power has restored electricity to some parts of Braamfontein, while other areas close by remain in the dark.

Braamfontein was one of the areas that were plunged into darkness on Wednesday after a fire on the M1 highway affected underground electricity cables.

The utility said that so far, power had been restored to office buildings in the area.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said that some assessments still needed to be done in the tunnels before work to restore electricity could begin.

“Tests must be conducted to assess the gas levels in the tunnels. The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) also needs to assess the structural integrity of the tunnel, to ascertain that it will not collapse and harm technicians while on duty.”

Mangena said that the extent of the damage and restoration time would be communicated to the public after an evaluation on Friday.
