Bournemouth v Luton abandoned after Tom Lockyer suffers cardiac arrest

The Premier League fixture between Bournemouth and Luton Town was called off midway through the second half after the Luton defender Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch and players from both sides were sent to their dressing rooms. Luton’s medical staff later confirmed the defender had suffered a cardiac arrest and will now be undergoing further tests in hospital.

Lockyer, who remained on the ground, was treated by paramedics and staff at the Vitality stadium after Luton manager Rob Edwards ran onto the pitch to move his players out of the way. Lockyer, who was removed from the field of play on a stretcher surrounded by the medical team, received a standing ovation from the crowd.

The BBC and Sky Sports reported that Lockyer, the club captain, was “alert and responsive” in the tunnel and Luton later issued a statement confirming what had happened and issuing an update on his condition.

“Our medical staff have confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch, but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher,” it read. “He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides. Tom was transferred to hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside. We would like to thank everyone for their support, concern and loving messages for Locks.
