Boozing and driving will cost you many lives

Boozing and driving will cost you many lives. It has become such a serious problem in the country that even government’s efforts have not helped. Drunk driving is one of the biggest causes of road deaths.

Drivers know it’s wrong, but they still continue to do it. Many people are arrested for drunk driving but they know that even if they are caught, they can still go back on the road and continue where they left off.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation must push for harsher punishment for those who are caught.

Currently, if one is arrested for drunk driving one can be granted bail in terms of Section 59 of the Criminal Procedure Act. There are clear health and behavioural risks when booze is not consumed responsibly.

In fact, on some occasions, it is better not to drink at all. All of us should play our part in reducing drunk driving. So forget the “one for the road” drink and remember that driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime.

If you have friends or family who still drive under the influence, speak to them before they get into trouble with the law.

Think before you drink and remain responsible. Let us arrive alive.
