The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says rescuers have recovered a body, believed to be that of a 17-year-old boy, who disappeared while swimming at Victoria Bay near George over the weekend.
A 20-year-old man, who was swimming with the teen at the time, remains missing.
Teams were deployed at around 6 PM on Saturday, following reports of two swimmers caught in rip currents and in distress, at Victoria Bay.
But an extensive sea and shoreline search revealed no sign of the missing pair.
“We can confirm that on Tuesday, 3 September, SAPS Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) recovered a body, assisted by NSRI Wilderness, at Victoria Bay, believed to be that of the 17-year-old. The body of the teenager was taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
“SAPS WPDS are continuing in an ongoing search operation. Thoughts and care are with the affected family and friends in this difficult time,” said NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon.
