Power FM remembers Bob Mabena a year after his death

POWER FM has remembered Bob Mabena a year after his death.

The station had the late radio host’s family and friends chat to the presenters throughout the day.

Bob, who was famously known as “The Jammer”, died on 10 August 2020 from cardiac arrest.

At the time of his death, he was hosting Power Breakfast with Faith Mangope.

The celebration of his life started on Power Breakfast with Thabiso “TT” Tema. His wife, Eucharist Mabena, spoke to TT about her relationship with Bob and what the past year had been like.

When asked how she was doing today, Eucharist said: “The sun took a little bit longer to rise on my side this morning, but I’m up.”

She said it had not been easy, but she had been soldering on.

“I think it feels like it’s been just one long day that hasn’t stopped, that hasn’t ended, you know? But we soldier on one step at a time,” she said.

Eucharist remembered how Bob spoilt her, saying he never left home without giving her a goodbye kiss.

She said even after a long day at work, he would still find time to come home and cook. She also said she taught him how to love.

“When I started going out with Bob, he said: ‘don’t ever waste time and be mad at me. Just love me. Just give me love because I cannot guarantee you tomorrow’, and I am grateful that we never wasted any time. There was no day where we went without talking or were mad at each other. It was just blissful joy every day,” said Eucharist.

“He had enormous love for those around him, especially his kids. It’s very difficult to lose somebody like that in life. He was not just a father to them, but he was a best friend. It’s difficult to not have that person in your life anymore that you can share everything with. But, we’re keeping each other strong,” she said.

She said the family came together frequently to go down memory lane.

Joining TT after Eucharist’s interview were Bob’s friends Thami Ntuli and George Manyosi, who also spoke about their relationship with him.

The station also had another celebration on its lunchtime show Power Talk with Lukhona Mnguni.

Given Mkhari, Winston Maimane and Bob’s son Kamo Mabena spoke to Lukhona about their relationship with him.

Kamo told the story of when he and his dad performed at a gig together. He plays the guitar.

“I have a distinct memory when he was going to a gig on a Sunday evening and I said: ‘we’ve never done this before, but can I just grab my guitar and come with you’. We had never rehearsed anything of that nature, but we got to the gig and I played my guitar. We just jammed. It’s a pity it only ever happened once, but I had the time of my life.”

Kamo joined Faith Mangope again on Power Lunch to speak more about Bob.
