The Western Cape government confirmed that 110 BMW vehicles purchased in 2022 were never used.
Instead, they were parked at government facilities, gathering dust.
The African National Congress (ANC) caucus in the Western Cape Legislature, meanwhile, was questioning the financial outlay, with a collective price tag of around R94 million.
Sixty new BMW vehicles were parked at the Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell, while fifty others were at a government garage – and were there for over a year.
The ANC provincial caucus confirmed each vehicle cost over R850,000.
The Office of the member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport, however, couldn’t confirm the exact figures.

The ANC’s Lulama Mvimbi said the vehicles were purchased without a plan, constituting fiscal dumping.
“These cars could be used to provide essential traffic services but instead they are just sitting there, costing taxpayers more money.
“The MEC needs to explain why these expensive vehicles have been sitting idle for over a year. This is wasteful and fruitless expenditure.”
However, the Department of Transport told the publication that the vehicles were being prepared to be used for traffic services.
The department couldn’t provide a date on when the cars would finally be used, claiming there were still a number of fittings that needed to be installed.
