More than 70 firefighters deployed to Eastern Cape’s Ugie as blaze rages

Over 70 firefighters have been deployed to Ugie in the Eastern Cape to assist with the ongoing wildfires.

The blaze has engulfed the area for a week with strong winds in the province leading to flare-ups in other parts of the town.

Firefighter organization Working on Fire said it has more teams on standby should more flare-ups occur.

It said the cause of the fire is still unknown.

“This fire has burnt an estimated 1 600 hectares of plantation and 2 600 hectares of grass. No animals and structures were affected by the fire and no injuries were reported,” said spokesperson Nthabiseng Mokone.

“The province is experiencing strong winds in many areas which in most cases affect the behaviour of the fire which forces firefighters to work very hard to suppress fires,” she added.

Meanwhile, the organization has sent another team to Canada – 200 firefighters to help with the ongoing wildfires there.
