City Power backtracks on no blackout promise

City Power says it’s being forced to implement rolling blackouts from Monday.
Over the weekend, the agency said it would defy Eskom and not cut electricity in Johannesburg.
But it now says it’s reached an agreement with the utility and will help it deal with its capacity issues.
Load-shedding continues from Monday night from 9 pm until 5 am Tuesday morning.
Eskom’s Koeberg power station tripped over the weekend and needs to replenish reserves.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said: “The decision by City Power was based on tech advice received after purchase agreement signed. However, Eskom requested we continue to load shed because of capacity problems.”
“Yesterday, [Sunday] our executives met with Eskom to come to an agreement.
“We agreed after Eskom presented they’re under severe constraints regarding capacity so we agreed, we’ll start load-shedding Joburg residents as from today [Monday] to assist Eskom in their capacity issues on their side.”
