The evidence of experienced clinical psychologist, Professor Gerhard Labuschagne will be considered as part of the state’s case against prominent Bishop Stephen Zondo following a ruling by the high court in Pretoria.
On Friday, the court ruled that Labuschagne’s evidence is admissible and his references are reliable.
The professor gave evidence on reasons why victims sometimes delay in reporting crime – testimony that has now been ruled to be admissible.
This is in light of Zondo’s alleged victims reporting the crimes years later.
The archbishop of the Rivers of Living Waters Church is accused of rape and sexual assault by some his church members and staff.
Judge Joseph Masopa ruled that Labuschagne’s evidence will not prejudice Zondo.
“It is therefore my considered view that the hearsay evidence of Professor Labuschagne is admissible as it falls within the requirements set out in the Minday and van der Walt matters and such reliance of the hearsay evidence is relevant to the facts in dispute.”
