Bishop Stephen Zondo is accused by some congregants of praying while s.e.xually abusing them at the same time.
The leader of the Rivers of Living Water Ministries is standing trial in the Pretoria High Court for the alleged rape and sexual assault of some of his congregants.
He is also accused of raping his niece in 1980, who was seven at the time.
The court has been hearing testimony from forensic psychologist Dr Gerhard Labuschagne, who interviewed the victims.
Labuschagne interviewed the women who accused Zondo of rape, and they all had similar stories to tell.
The similarities include how he allegedly threatened them with death or a curse after he abused them, forbidding them from speaking about it. Furthermore, he allegedly blended the sexual abuse with religious activities.
“When called into the accused’s office, she was told that she had a spirit inside of her, that her life is stagnant, and that the devil had entered her body via her birthmark. Thus, while the incident was taking place, he was simultaneously praying,” said Labuschagne.
Zondo’s lawyers asked for the day to consult with their expert before cross-examination on Wednesday.
